Industry Insight

When content ideas dry up, the algorithm doesn’t wait. But with the right system, you can show up consistently - even on your busiest weeks.

Tiffany McIntyre, co-founder of Heron Media and local social media strategist, shares her go-to approach for staying visible online:

“Content pillars help me focus my ideas and plan ahead. Create a loose theme for each posting day of the week, then batch multiple posts on each theme so you’re not starting from scratch each day.”

Tiffany McIntyre

This week’s issue is packed with tips that support that same mindset - from simple post prompts you can pull from anytime, to examples of local businesses doing it right. Whether you're starting from scratch or just looking to fill in the blanks, we’ve got you covered.

And Here’s Your Guide:

What to Post When You Don’t Know What to Post

We’re going to assume you’ve already got sharing about your products and services covered on social media. That’s not what this guide is about. This is for the in-between moments when your calendar’s empty and your creativity’s on pause.

Here are a few ideas to spark some inspiration and keep your content pipeline flowing:

1. Client Testimonials
Forget the fancy Canva template for this one, grab a quick photo of a handwritten note, a kind email, or a card a customer left behind. You can even screenshot a text (keep it anonymous). A visual testimonial feels more authentic and engaging, and it doesn’t take long to post.

2. Social Media Holidays & National Days
We love this Canadian specific resource from Metricool. Pick the ones that align with your brand values and make sense for you to post about. Celebrating National Small Business Day? Tag a few of your local favourites and uplift your community while getting engagement. Or maybe take the team out for a slice on National Pizza Day - pick a locally owned spot and see if they want to collaborate.

3. Community Events
From Rifflandia to weekend markets, posting about local events your customers are attending (or that you’re involved in) shows you’re part of the community. Bonus if you tag other local businesses to increase reach.

4. Behind-the-Scenes Moments
Whether you’re packing up orders, remerchandising a shelf, or planning something new, people love seeing how the magic happens. Keep it candid and real. Bonus points for pet content!

5. Team Spotlights
Celebrate work anniversaries, shout out special skills, or just re-introduce the humans behind the brand. It builds trust and reminds your audience there are real people running the show. It also makes your employees feel valued which will make them want to stick with you.

6. Throwback Posts
Been around a while? Share an early-days photo and talk about how far you’ve come. Audiences love a glow-up moment, especially local ones who’ve followed your journey from the start. There is a great and highly engaged group on Facebook called Old Victoria BC who would really love to see your post if you operate from a heritage building!

7. Local Love
Feature another local business you admire, a great service you received, or a collab you’re working on. Tag them, say why you love them, and watch the community engagement roll in. Example: “Shoutout to @littlejunecafe for fueling our Monday mornings. If you haven’t tried their strawberry chia pudding yet - run, don’t walk.”

When in doubt, think of your page like a conversation. If you wouldn’t enjoy seeing the post as a customer, skip it. But if it adds value, tells a story, or connects you to your audience in some way - post away.

Let your feed reflect the real, local heart behind your business.

Bonus Scroll: Make Your Own Custom Content Calendar in Canva

Stay organized and beat the last-minute posting scramble with a visual calendar tailored to your business.

Here’s how to build your own in under 10 minutes:

1. Open Canva and Search "Content Calendar"
In the search bar, type “Content Calendar” and browse the available templates. Look for one with a monthly or weekly layout and enough space to jot down ideas.

2. Choose a Template That Matches Your Style
Pick a layout that’s clean and flexible — ideally with editable text boxes for each day. Don’t worry about the colors or fonts; you can customize those next.

3. Customize the Calendar for Your Brand

  • Add your logo, brand colors, and fonts

  • Rename the template to reflect the current month (e.g. “July Content Plan”)

  • Update the dates and delete any extra text boxes or filler content

4. Add Your Content Pillars as Color-Coded Labels
Create small colored tags or use icons to represent your core content themes (like Testimonials, Behind the Scenes, Education, etc.). This will help you balance your content visually.

5. Start Filling in Your Posts

  • Add text to each day with the planned post type or topic

  • Leave room for captions, hashtags, or image ideas

  • You can even upload photo previews into the calendar for a full visual mockup

6. Duplicate the Page to Plan Future Weeks or Months
Once you have one version set up, right-click and duplicate the page to plan ahead. You’ll save time and maintain a consistent structure.

7. Save and Revisit Weekly
Use this calendar as your home base each week. You can edit it right in Canva or download a PDF version to print and pin at your desk.

No more scrambling for last-minute post ideas! Your content plan lives right here, and it’s totally your own.

Want help creating one? Reply to this email with your version - we’d love to see how you use it!

Community Spotlight:

One of the missions behind The YYJ Scroll is to elevate creators who are using social media to build community, uplift others, and create something meaningful. This week’s feature @victoriabikerave is consistently bringing good vibes to our feed and our community with their uplifting and inclusive events.

What started as a mobile dance party has grown into a movement that blends community, inclusivity, and pure fun. With wheels spinning and speakers blasting, Bike Rave events bring people together in the most unexpected and delightful way. Just yesterday they danced through Esquimalt for Pride Ride, reminding us that celebration can be a form of connection, and that the best social media content starts with real moments and shared joy.

Their events are open to everyone on wheels and filled with colour, light, and beats by local DJs. Even better, their social media is a masterclass in authenticity and community vibes building hype, spreading love, and making sure no one feels left out.

In a world of curated feeds, Victoria Bike Rave keeps it real, local, and full of heart. For that, we’re proud to feature them as this week’s Creator of the Week. Follow them to join the next movement.

That’s a wrap for this week’s edition of The YYJ Scroll. Whether you’re planning your next post, refreshing your content calendar, or just soaking up some local inspiration, we hope you found something that sparks your creativity.

We’ll be back next Saturday with more practical tips, creator spotlights, and ideas rooted in community. If you’re enjoying these, hit reply and let us know or better yet, forward this to someone who might love it too.
